Fairfield Arts Commission: Spotlight Series - George Billis
Meet George Billis, owner and founder of the George Billis Gallery, located at 1700 Post Road in Heritage Square, Fairfield. This is George’s third successful gallery space—unsurprising given his discerning eye and curatorial expertise. His other locations are in New York City and Los Angeles.
His decision to open a gallery in Fairfield, CT came during the COVID-19 pandemic when his family relocated to Connecticut from New York City. The accessibility, especially via train, to go in and out of Manhattan from Fairfield was a selling point in selecting a location. Since its opening, the Fairfield gallery has been voted the #1 Gallery in Connecticut’s Gold Coast for 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Upon entering the gallery at Heritage Square, visitors are greeted by a striking selection of paintings and works on paper, which are George’s primary focus. The exhibitions are occasionally complemented by sculptures, offering a well-rounded visual experience. The works on display come from a rotating roster of artists—both local and across the country.
For George, being part of the Fairfield arts scene means “being a part of a cultural community.” I’ve had the pleasure of attending several exhibition openings, where I’ve not only caught up with George and his colleague Amy, but also had the chance to speak directly with the featured artists. These personal interactions enrich the overall gallery experience.
