Pequot Library’s Derby Day Returns May 2nd!
What is Pequot Library's Derby Day, coming up on May 2?
Derby Day is one of Pequot Library's biggest and best annual fundraisers. 2026 is your FINAL chance to experience all of the excitement - bust out your fascinators, seersucker suits, and brightest sundresses! There's a schedule of events here. You can expect about five hours of nonstop fun and socializing.
Derby Day has sold out for the past few years, so buy your tickets today!
Some attendees set up over-the-top tailgates on the Great Lawn for an extra fee. Buying a tailgate gives you 2 tickets while also allowing you to create a little party within a party.
Do I have to purchase a tailgate to attend? Nope! Loads of people come without a tailgate - you just have to buy an individual ticket. ($100 of each ticket is tax-deductible.)
Ticketholders make their way around the Great Lawn visiting tailgates and mingling. Tailgate owners have loads of food and beverage on hand and are happy to share. Ticketholders can also find nibbles and browse silent auction items in a big white tent centrally located on the Great Lawn. There are two bar carts to hit as well, and you can vote on your favorite horse by participating in our 50/50 raffle.
Derby Dollars are the currency of the day, and you can use them to vote for the winning horse and take home a bottle of bourbon from our bourbon wall! Everyone gathers in the historic auditorium to watch the actual race on a large screen TV, followed by an after-party with DJ Rob. The library gives awards for Best-dressed Lady, Gentleman, Hat, and the three top tailgates, which adds to the excitement and sense of friendly competition.
Founded in 1889, Pequot Library is dedicated to enriching lives through cultural, educational, and intellectual engagement. Our programs serve more than 56,000 people annually. Derby Day supports all aspects of our operations and helps to care for the 30,000+ items in our Special Collections. Thanks for showing us your supporting by attending Derby Day!
