Fairfield Arts Commission: Spotlight Series - Florence Ferrat

Meet Florence Ferrat, a Parisian artist based in Connecticut, who primarily works with ceramics, but also enjoys paint and mixed media.

Florence is a self-taught artist originally from Paris, now based in Connecticut. While ceramics is her main focus, shaping raw clay into expressive, tactile forms, she also paints and explores mixed media. Her work is rooted in emotion, often using recycled materials to tell stories of transformation and beauty in imperfection.

Florence’s creative journey began by observing her father’s passion for painting. Growing up surrounded by art, she developed a deep appreciation to it as a way to explore and communicate her innermost emotions. She uses art to transform feelings into visual form, of any medium. What she makes is not planned but felt.

Florence shared that “Being part of the Fairfield arts community means connection, support, and creative exchange.” She added, “My work is created at “the Studio Fairfield” and truly love the atmosphere—everyone is welcoming, open, and generous with their ideas. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by artists from across Fairfield County who are passionate and eager to share their vision.”

When discussing her process, Florence shared, “I may be trying to create a ceramic piece, only for it to collapse before the kiln, or shatter after. Experimenting with paint colors only for it to appear different on the canvas.” She continued, “These moments that may seem like failures instead transform the piece into something new, serving as my inspiration for the next. I see beauty in imperfection; I do not start over.”

 Florence prefers for her art to be viewed in a vacuum, which is why she choose to remain largely anonymous. She wants people to engage with her art, not her. Her work can be viewed at the location below or by visiting her website or following her on Instagram.
